Departments

The School of Mines and Built Environment was established in the 2021/2022 academic year with the following four initial departments:

  1. Department of Sustainable Mineral Resource Development
  2. Department of Land Management
  3. Department of Architecture and Construction Management
  4. Department of Planning and Sustainability Studies

Two of these departments, namely Department of Sustainable Mineral Resource Department and Department of Land Management are operational.

Department of Sustainable Mineral Resource Development

The Department of Sustainable Mineral Resource Development is one of the core departments of the School of Mines and Built Environment. The department is focused on highlighting and drawing attention to potentials of development minerals or critical minerals and how they can be effectively harnessed for sustainable development. It focuses on the development of these mineral resources, value addition and effective management. The academic programmes and training in this department will focus on mineral resource exploration, development and value addition as well as extractive resource management. The Department of Sustainable Mineral Resource Development currently hosts the BSc Sustainable Mining and MSc Sustainable Mining programmes.

Department of Land Management

The Department of Land Management is one of the initial departments of the School of Mines and Built Environment to be operationalized. The core mandate of the Department of Land Management is to run academic programmes focusing on the management of land and landed properties. The Department of Land Management has effectively rolled out a number of academic programmes such as BSc Sustainable Land Management, MSc/MPhil Land Degradation Neutrality and PhD Sustainable Land Management. The Department intends to design programmes such as real estate development and/or finance as well as facilities or property management to cover the remaining part of its mandate.
